Collagen & UV-driven aging
A study published in Phytotherapy Research (Chen et al., 2011) examined how chlorella-derived peptides behave on skin fibroblasts after UVB exposure. The researchers reported that chlorella-derived peptide diminished UVB-induced MMP-1 and restored procollagen mRNA — meaning it both blocked the enzyme that breaks collagen down and helped restart the body's own collagen production. A salve doesn't need water to work — it needs structure. Natural beeswax is one of the most time-honored bases in skincare: a complex matrix of long-chain esters and fatty acids that melts at skin temperature and absorbs without the greasy, pore-clogging weight of heavier butters. It is non-comedogenic, deeply emollient, and reinforces the skin's lipid barrier while restoring softness to cracked, irritated, or over-stripped skin.

Beeswax also gives the salve its protective architecture. It forms a breathable, semi-occlusive seal that holds the active botanicals against the skin and shields a compromised barrier from external aggressors — without suffocating it. 02 The Hero Botanical

Oil-Extracted Chlorella

Using a lipid-based oil-extraction method, we capture the fat-soluble nutrients of Chlorella microalgae — the most chlorophyll-dense organism on earth — without diluting them in water. The result is a concentrate rich in chlorophyll, B-vitamins, amino acids, and naturally occurring peptides that floods inflamed skin with the building blocks it needs to repair.

That same chlorophyll carries documented antimicrobial activity: published research shows chlorophyll derivatives actively inhibit the growth of acne-causing bacteria. Blue tansy (Tanacetum annuum) earns its place through chamazulene — the compound responsible for its signature ink-blue color and its remarkable anti-inflammatory power. Chamazulene works by inhibiting leukotriene and prostaglandin production, the same inflammatory mediators targeted by non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs — which is why it calms visible redness, heat, and irritation on contact.

Beyond calming reactive skin, blue tansy delivers antioxidant protection, supports skin-cell regeneration, and carries documented antibacterial and antifungal properties — making it especially effective for acne-prone and compromised complexions, and transformative for conditions like rosacea and eczema.

A note on its rarity: Tanacetum annuum grows in limited regions, is at risk of over-farming, and yields very little oil per harvest. Most formulas use it sparingly. In the Emerald Salve, it earns its place.

In practical terms: every liter of this oil represents carbon pulled down, not extracted up.

That same closed system is what makes the actives reliable. Field-grown botanicals vary batch to batch — sunlight, soil, rainfall, harvest timing. A fermenter doesn't. The carotenoid load, the PUFA ratio, the PDRN fraction are all reproducible within tight tolerances, which is why the formula performs the same in January as it does in July.

And the "molecular vacuum" idea isn't poetic license. Replaced two products I was using for inflammation

I was using a separate blue tansy oil and a separate balm for my eczema-prone patches around my nose and mouth. This salve combines both functions and works better than either of them did individually. The chlorella aspect was new to me but I'm sold - my skin tone is more uniform and my random flare-ups have noticeably decreased. The scent is strong out of the jar but mellows on the skin to something almost meditative. Perfect for nighttime.

The most beautiful thing in my routine

Okay, the aesthetics of this product are unmatched. The salve is this deep cobalt blue from the blue tansy, it looks like a jar of ocean. I keep it on my vanity just to look at. But it's not just pretty - my skin has visibly improved since I started using it. Calmer, more hydrated, more even. I do find it takes a little while to fully sink in so I apply it as the very last step of my evening routine and let it work overnight. By morning my skin is glowing.

My sensitive skin finally has a friend

I react to everything. Fragrance, essential oils, "natural" products, "gentle" products, you name it. I was nervous about the blue tansy because it IS an essential oil, but my dermatologist gave it the green light and she was right - zero irritation. Just calmer, less reactive skin. I think the chlorella is doing real work because my overall complexion looks more vibrant, like my skin is actually well-fed. The scent is subtle and natural, nothing like the synthetic fragrances that usually wreck me. Cannot recommend enough.

Patience required

Loving the actual effects of this salve - my redness is down, my skin feels nourished, and the blue tansy scent is calming at night. BUT this thing takes forever to fully absorb. I'm talking 20+ minutes before my face stops looking shiny and feeling tacky. If I lie down too soon I get blue-green smudges on my pillowcase (washes out, unlike I've heard about the astaxanthin version, but still annoying). I've learned to apply it well before bed and use it as a "wind down" cue, but if you're someone who wants a quick in-and-out routine, this isn't it. I still recommend it, just plan around the absorption time. Knocking a star off purely for that.

Great product, packaging tells on itself a bit

I want to be upfront that the salve inside is genuinely lovely - calming, effective, beautiful color, smells like an herb garden. My critique is purely about the packaging. You can tell Algae Aura is a newer/smaller brand here. The jar feels lightweight, the label is a little off-center on mine, and the overall presentation doesn't quite match what I'd expect at this... well, even at this lower price point I want it to feel a bit more elevated. I'm not saying it has to be Augustinus Bader-level luxury, but a heavier glass jar, a more polished label, maybe a nicer outer box would go a long way. The product itself is 5 stars. Knocking two off for the unboxing experience not matching the quality of what's inside. I genuinely root for this brand and I think small upgrades here would help them compete with bigger names.
